Background of the study
Informal education has become a transformative tool for fostering community engagement among secondary school students. In Dass Local Government Area, Bauchi State, community service is increasingly recognized as an essential component of holistic education. Informal learning methods, such as community-based projects, volunteer work, and interactive civic workshops, play a critical role in encouraging students to take an active part in the development of their communities (Ibrahim, 2023). These initiatives provide practical learning experiences that extend beyond the traditional classroom, equipping students with a sense of social responsibility and civic awareness (Bello, 2024). By engaging in community service, students not only acquire valuable life skills but also develop empathy and a deeper understanding of local societal challenges (Chukwu, 2025).

In Dass, informal education has been integrated into school activities to promote a culture of service and volunteerism. Local NGOs, community leaders, and educators collaborate to design programs that allow students to participate in various community improvement projects. These programs often include environmental clean-ups, health awareness campaigns, and literacy drives, which contribute to both personal development and community well-being (Okoro, 2024). The interactive nature of these programs creates opportunities for students to learn problem-solving and teamwork in real-life contexts, reinforcing the importance of collective action (Amina, 2023). Moreover, the flexibility of informal education allows these initiatives to be tailored to the specific needs of the local community, thereby maximizing their relevance and impact.

Despite the evident benefits, challenges persist. Many schools struggle with limited resources and logistical difficulties that impede the effective implementation of community service projects. In addition, the sporadic nature of these informal initiatives means that the continuity and long-term impact on student engagement are often uncertain (Ibrahim, 2023). Nevertheless, the growing emphasis on community service in educational policies reflects a broader commitment to nurturing socially responsible citizens (Bello, 2024). The appraisal of informal education in this context is critical, as it provides insights into how educational practices can be adapted to enhance community participation and overall societal development (Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the problem
In Dass Local Government Area, while informal education initiatives aimed at promoting community service have shown promise, several challenges hinder their full potential. Schools often experience difficulties in aligning community service projects with academic schedules, leading to inconsistent student participation. Limited funding, inadequate planning, and insufficient support from local authorities further complicate the effective implementation of these programs (Okoro, 2024). As a result, the anticipated positive impact on student civic engagement is not uniformly realized, and the overall effectiveness of informal education in fostering a service-oriented mindset remains in question (Amina, 2023).

Furthermore, there is a disconnect between the objectives of community service projects and the practical realities faced by students. The lack of sustained mentorship and follow-up mechanisms means that the lessons learned during these projects do not always translate into long-term behavioral changes (Ibrahim, 2023). Cultural and socio-economic factors also play a role, as some communities may not fully appreciate or support the value of student-led community service, thus affecting participation rates (Bello, 2024). This disconnect highlights the need for a more integrated approach that considers both the educational and societal dimensions of community service. A thorough evaluation of these challenges is necessary to identify effective strategies for improving the alignment between informal education initiatives and community development goals (Chukwu, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the impact of informal education on students’ involvement in community service projects.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by schools in implementing informal educational community service initiatives.

  3. To propose strategies for improving student engagement in community service through informal education.

Research questions:

  1. How does informal education influence secondary school students’ involvement in community service?

  2. What are the primary challenges in implementing community service projects within schools?

  3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of informal education in promoting community service?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Informal education significantly increases student participation in community service activities.

  2. Resource constraints and scheduling conflicts negatively affect the implementation of community service projects.

  3. Enhanced mentorship and community support improve the outcomes of informal educational initiatives.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of informal education in fostering community service among secondary school students in Dass Local Government Area. The findings will provide critical insights for educators, community leaders, and policymakers on how to bridge the gap between academic learning and community engagement. By addressing existing challenges and proposing actionable strategies, the research aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of community service initiatives. Ultimately, this study will contribute to the development of socially responsible citizens and the sustainable improvement of local communities.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the impact of informal education on community service involvement among secondary school students in Dass Local Government Area. It focuses solely on local initiatives and the challenges associated with resource availability and program implementation.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Informal education: Learning through non-traditional, community-based experiences.

  2. Community service: Voluntary activities aimed at improving local societal conditions.

  3. Engagement: The level of active participation and commitment by students.
